Wondering what playground trends will be big in 2018? We’ve compiled 4 of our favorite new playground trends. From sensory playgrounds and incorporated fitness structures to playable art and so much wood, these are playground trends to watch in 2018.

Sensory Playground

Children with Autism or Sensory Processing Disorders may struggle in a traditional playground due to challenges with socialization, communication, play, and imagination. Sensory playgrounds help bridge the gap for these kids, providing sensory stimulation that will help them engage with the playground and their peers. But sensory playgrounds aren’t just for kids with Autism or Sensory Processing Disorders. All kids can benefit from the exploration and discovery that sensory playgrounds promote, which is why you will see many playgrounds adding in sensory play equipment like outdoor musical instruments in 2018.

Incorporated Fitness Structures

Some of the best public playgrounds incorporate fitness structures into their design. These structures may be balance beams and monkey bars aimed at helping kids develop physical proficiency, or they may be actual outdoor gym equipment like ellipticals and row machines. In 2018, you’ll see more and more playgrounds incorporate fitness structures for all ages to promote activity across multiple generations.

Wood and Rope

In 2018, there will be plenty of themed playgrounds, but the basics are making a comeback with wood and rope playgrounds that blend in with natural surroundings and feel grounded. Rather than overwhelming kids with lots of bright colors and options, wood and rope playgrounds will form a strong foundation for imaginative play.

Playable Art

Playground space isn’t always pretty, but playable art is changing the traditional plastic slide and swingset. Many communities are opting for custom playground pieces that are modern and unique - as visually appealing as they are fun. These pieces will abound in 2018, elevating your local playground to a work of art.
