There are a lot of things to consider when building a community playground. Some communities get so caught up raising funds and choosing cool equipment that they forget to figure out the needs of their community. We’ve compiled a list of 4 questions to ask before building your playground. Answering these questions will help you choose playground equipment and materials that will meet your community’s needs well into the future.

Who Will Be Using The Equipment?

Is your playground targeted at a certain age group? Toddlers require much different equipment than school-age children. Plus, there is plenty of equipment that can extend the functionality of your playground so that even adults can enjoy it. Determining what age groups the playground will serve will guide your equipment choices, as well as your playground surface material.

What Accessibility Issues Need to Be Met?

Do you want your playground to be accessible for all children? Parents in your community will certainly thank you, but this does dictate the equipment you choose. Learn how to make your playground handicap accessible. While working on accessibility, you may want to consider adding in an adult swing for older children and adults with special needs.

Where Will Adults Be?

Adults play a large role in playground safety, but many playgrounds aren’t set up for them to supervise carefully. If your target is younger children who need more intense adult supervision, consider using plexiglass material on blind spots in the equipment. What Local Codes and Requirements Apply?

The last thing you want is to spend all your time and money building a beautiful community playground - only to have to tear it down because it doesn’t meet local codes and requirements. Look into your local codes and requirements early in the planning process to make sure you meet them. While some of these rules may seem arbitrary, many of them are there to protect the children and community members who use the playground.
