Gazebo vs. Shade Shelter: Which One is Right for Your Space?

Gazebo or shade shelter? Shade shelter or gazebo? When looking to shade your outdoor space you have a few different options to choose from. Making the right decision is essential to ensure you are happy with your shaded area for many years to come.

We have whipped up a quick guide to choosing which option, shade shelter or gazebo, is going to be the right one for your space. Ask yourself these questions and you should be able to make your decision by the end of this post!

What kind of area is your space?

Is your space long, short, between other structures, or a stand alone area? Does it cover other structures such as barbeques or benches, or are you looking to get them installed? If your space is in between other structures, then the obvious choice is a shade shelter. A shade shelter generally takes up less room than a gazebo so this is the right choice in this instance.

If you have a standalone area, for many it is popular to choose a gazebo. This also goes for areas that have a similar width and length, although some do choose to install long gazebos, particularly for undercover eating areas.

Do you want the option to open up the roof?

While some gazebos have retractable roofs, the majority of them do not. You are far more likely to encounter retractable shade structures. If you are interested in opening up the space above your head, then a shade shelter is likely the right choice to make.

If you are happy having an always covered roof, then a gazebo could be right for your space, depending on the kind of area.

Do you want a fixed structure / how long do you want it to last?

Fixed structures, like gazebos, are great because they generally are very hard wearing and will last decades (and sometimes longer!). With shade structures, they may not last as long and need replacing sooner. This is important to consider when you are thinking about the longevity of your structure.

Another aspect to consider is non-fixed shade structures. For instance, if you’d like one in winter but want to do away with it in summer, then you can find some shade structures that can be packed away over summer, but this isn’t the case for gazebos.
