How to Decorate the Exterior of your Home

What’s more important? The interior and fittings of your home, or the exterior and surrounds? The answer to this question is: BOTH! If you’re looking for some tips on increasing curb appeal for your home then keep reading on to find out just how to do it.

Go with your home’s exterior styling

Does your home look like an English cottage? Well, then you should suit your curb and surrounds to it, with decorative curbing, small gardens and a cute pathway. Generally, the style of home that you have will dictate, or at the very least guide, your decorating efforts.

Of course, if you want to go radical and fun with it, then you can too! It’s your home, so the choice is yours. If you decide to go down this second path, remember that resale value may be slightly lower when you put your home on the market.

Steal from your neighbors

No, not their garden gnomes… their ideas! If you notice that your neighbors have some great looking homes from the outside, then check out how they’re creating that look. What sort of design is their front yard and their curb? What sort of plants are they using? What other features have they incorporated? How does it tie into the aesthetic of their home itself?

If something works for your neighbors, then it might very well work for you, too. There’s nothing wrong with lifting or borrowing ideas from others so long as it’s not an exact carbon copy!

Be aware of your budget

Just because something looked amazing in one of the glossy home magazines you saw in the doctor’s office doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be able to replicate it within your budget. While that replica of a Michelago sculpture turned into a fountain looked ah-mazing and would be just perfect for your front yard, doesn’t mean that you should spend a fortune on doing it.

Create a budget for your redecoration attempts and make sure to stick with it. We’re sure that those dollars that you save can be very well spent somewhere else.

Ask a pro

There’s nothing wrong with getting a little bit of help. If you’re no design whizz and you’re stuck with what to do with your exterior space, then have a chat with a landscaper or designer. These type of professionals can give good tips on how to increase the curb appeal of your specific home.
