With summer on its way, everyone wants to be outside enjoying the beautiful weather and extended sunshine. That means it’s time to prep your yard for summer fun. Preparing your yard for summer takes more than mowing the yard or trimming the hedges. Read on to learn how to prep your yard and keep it looking beautiful throughout the summer and for years to come.

Refresh Your Lawn

A beautiful yard starts with a healthy lawn. Take a critical look at your landscaping. Are there bare patches? Areas overrun with weeds? Sagging tree limbs?

Start by trimming any dead or hanging limbs. Then, pull up any weed patches or treat with weed killer. Once you’ve pulled up unsightly weeds, aerate your lawn if needed. Last, fill in any dead or bare patches, the follow with fertilizer and water.

Keep your lawn looking fresh by mowing and weeding regularly. Too much overgrowth can hide other unsightly problems such as erosion and drainage issues, which we’ll address in the next two sections of this post.

Install Retaining Walls

If your yard is on a slope, or if you have mature trees, look for signs of topsoil erosion - exposed roots, standing water and puddles, or bare patches that are depressed. These are serious issues that can affect the integrity of your property and should be addressed immediately.

Retaining walls are both decorative and functional - they provide a beautiful and natural design while combating erosion. They can be used to build up low-lying areas or to protect trees and flower gardens. In addition, pavers can be installed to cover low-lying areas, beautify bare patches, or simply provide a needed walkway. Retaining walls and pavers can be made of wood, concrete or stone. While upfront costs can vary, once installed these features are easy to maintain and help you save landscaping and avoid costly repairs in the long run.

Xeriscape Your Garden

Whether drought is a problem in your area or not, everyone can benefit from using less water for lawn care. Upgrade your yard by replacing high-water plants with drought-resistant xeriscape gardens. These low-needs plants are hearty, need less water, and can withstand extreme temps.

Xeriscaping can also help you address any drainage issues in your yard. Downspouts causing a muddy mess? Beautify the area and clean up standing water with decorative curbing and a small xeriscape feature under the downspout. You can easily convert your current flower beds to xeriscape beds by swapping out plants and adding decorative rock formations. You’ll get a beautiful yard and save on your water bill!
