Today, we’re talking about facilities maintenance – an important part of your duties if you are the owner or caretaker of a recreational area. If an outdoor basketball court is part of these facilities that you manage or oversee, then these tips should come in handy!

You might think that an outdoor basketball court will pretty much take care of itself, but there are a few things that you need to do every now and then to make sure that it stays in good conditions and is not a hazard to players.

Sweep regularly

The most regular maintenance needed for an outdoor basketball court is sweeping – around once a week, so long as there aren’t any overhanging trees dropping debris on it on a daily basis. Sweep to remove any leaves, nuts, rubbish, etc. This might be done at the same time that other facilities are cleaned on the site, too.

Pressure clean the court for a deep clean

Give your basketball court a deep clean about once every year or so to give it a really good clean. After time, dirt and muck build up on the surface of the court, so cleaning with a high pressure hose is a good way to loosen and remove this build up. It is recommended to pressure clean the court after winter is over and before the spring basketball season kicks off.

Less regular maintenance

Over time, you might find that your basketball court is deteriorating – cracks are showing on the surface, water pooling in some areas, and then original lines might fade. Resurfacing of a basketball court is recommended every 3-4 years.  This isn’t the type of job you’ll be able to complete yourself, so hiring a professional for this task is best.. They will repair any cracks and add new lines, so your outdoor basketball court is looking good as new - and more importantly, highly usable again – in no time.
