How to Prepare Your Gazebo for Autumn

Adding a gazebo to your landscape increases property value and the beauty of your home. A gazebo also provides you with an outdoor structure to use however you desire, whether it is the installation of a hot tub within the gazebo or adding some chairs and a small table for a quiet place to enjoy your coffee.

Even if you decide to keep your gazebo bare and simply do some landscaping near it with various flowers or bushes and trees, the structure is a unique accent for your home and landscape. In order to keep your gazebo as beautiful as possible in the upcoming season, there is a certain amount of maintenance required. Autumn is a beautiful season; however it can present some challenges when caring for your gazebo.

To help with the longevity of your gazebo, the first thing you should be concerned with is making sure your gazebo is free from mold or mildew. While you may simply consider these items to be an eyesore, if left unattended, mold and mildew may lead to the deterioration of materials used in the building of your gazebo. Cleaning mold off your gazebo requires simple household cleaners and a bit of elbow grease. Mix dish soap, bleach and water and grab a few sponges before you head outside. Apply the mixture to your gazebo and allow this cleansing solution to penetrate the gazebo for several minutes. Once it has soaked for a few minutes, dip the sponge back into the solution and scrub. Rinse well with your hose to complete the wash.

Once you have cleaned your gazebo, your next defense against autumn weather is to use weather-resistant sprays. These sprays are best for canopy gazebos that feature vinyl or canvas as their covers. Weather-resistant sprays essentially provide a coating that protects materials from the wet and stormy weather that autumn brings. Simply head to your local home improvement store and pick up a can of weatherproofing spray. Spray over the surface from a few inches away and allow ample time for this to dry.

Although the best protection for your gazebo against inclement weather is to disassemble it and store it in your garage through the winter months, this is not always possible or practical. To help keep falling leaves from cluttering your gazebo, leave any mosquito netting you have up during autumn and avoid having to constantly remove soggy leaves from your gazebo. In addition to mosquito netting, you may want to consider adding screening to your gazebo in order to keep you as warm as possible in the autumn months.

Keep your gazebo as a source of enjoyment and beauty by being sure to perform regular maintenance checks and by helping to prepare your gazebo's materials for cooler weather.
