Each year a stunning number of children are injured due to playground related injuries. Statistics show that more than 200,000 kids per year are hospitalized after falling from play equipment such as improperly placed swings, play sets, etc. Child safety is important. Whether it’s in a public park or the parent’s back yard, no one wants to see a child hurt due to unsafe playground equipment.

Playground Safety
Build Playgrounds on Shock Absorbing Surfaces –
Using a shock absorbing surface under play equipment is an important part of enhancing the safety of any playground. Surfaces such as dirt and grass are not shock absorbent and will not protect a child should they fall from a swing or other play equipment. It is necessary to use a soft, absorbent material such as a bed of wood chips to soften the impact and help prevent children from sustaining injury during the fall. Playground regulations state that a soft surface should extend at least 6 feet in any direction from the play equipment in order to properly protect the child.

Install Playground Equipment Professionally – Having someone professionally install playground equipment is another huge step towards child safety. Even if you are just installing a swing-set in your back yard, having it installed by a professional means that it will be sturdily built and up to safety codes so that you will know your child is safe. A professional installer can also improve the appearance of a playground and will have access to the various materials needed for constructing a fun and safe playground.

Use Proper Spacing Between Play Equipment – Spacing playground equipment too closely together can be hazardous to children. Should anyone fall, they can become tangled in another play-set, turning a harmless fall into a potentially lethal one. Play equipment should be spaced a minimum of 9 feet apart if it is taller than 30 inches.

Remove Dangerous Protrusions – Dangerous protrusions such as hooks, S bends and pipes should be removed from the area. The playground should also be checked for sharp edges such as screws, torn metal, etc. These can cut children and over time can become extremely dangerous as they rust. Anyone building or managing a playground should examine the park every few months for safety hazards.

Remove Tripping Hazards – Tripping hazards can also be dangerous in a playground. Remember to remove low obstacles and tree stumps in order to provide the safest environment possible for children.

Supervise Children During Play – While improving the safety of a playground is extremely important, it is also important to constantly supervise children at play. An adult supervisor can prevent major harm to a child or can come to the rescue if the child is hurt or in a potentially harmful position.

Playgrounds should be safe and fun for children of all ages. Following these safety tips and regulations can keep your children out of the hospital and on the playground. Hiring a playground expert to examine a playground for safety issues, or hiring an expert to install your playground is the easiest way to prevent playground injuries!
