Playground Trends of 2017

Playgrounds just seem to get cooler as the years roll on. It is no longer “good enough” to have a little cubby house with a slide and a couple of swings. Playgrounds are getting high tech and complex, so you really want to keep up if you want your playground to make an impact on the community. If you’re looking for the biggest enticements in playgrounds in 2017, then you’ve come to the right place. Today, we present what’s hot on the playground scene for this year.

The theme

Pick a theme and roll with it. If you’re going to impress the kids (and the parents), be sure to choose a fun theme for your playground. Think about what kids are interested in … dinosaurs, pirates, castles. When you choose a theme it gives you a grand scheme to work toward. You can incorporate things like cut outs, big structures, and little touches that will really wow the crowd.

Water water all around

One of the more interesting aspects of playgrounds that we’ve seen popping up in the past decade is a lot of water play in playgrounds. Things like mini aqueducts, fountain sprinklers, funnels and buckets have been featured around the world and the trends continue in 2017. Be sure to incorporate enough playground elements for wintertime play, as well.

Do your part for the environment and make your playground eco-friendly. You can do this by including recycled artwork and materials, and maybe even go with the natural layout of your land, rather than reconstructing the landscape. Think lots of plants, as well – this is an outdoor space, so you want to marry the outdoors with your playground, too. You can purchase native plants that don’t require a lot of maintenance and plant them around the playground.

There are many different surfaces that you can place beneath your playground to cushion falls. What we’re seeing in 2017 is the trend toward poured in place rubber, or PIP. PIP is a soft material that also allows for drainage, so it’s quite easy to maintain. While it can be a little more expensive than other types of underfoot materials, it lasts long and is very safe for children.

Whirl Construction can help you develop and build your dream playground. We have a long history in the tri-state area with happy customers with playgrounds that last. We can also help with other park amenities such as curbing, rubbish bins, seating, and more.
