beautiful_outdoor_retaining_wallRetaining walls have many practical and aesthetic uses; in addition to being attractive and useful, they can add value to your home or business and often can be constructed from high quality materials for a very reasonable price. Retaining walls can increase your home's value, are durable and long-lasting, can be earth-friendly, and come in a wide range of choices.

Added Home Value

Many home improvements will increase the overall value of your home, and a retaining wall is no exception. Adding a retaining wall is an easy, affordable way to increase your home's value. If you're adding a wall of natural materials to your garden, you'll find it easy to make adjustments or change the wall if necessary. Another way retaining walls increase your home's value is by adding versatility to the space around your house; if you choose to have separate vegetable and flower gardens, for example, you can separate them with a simple and attractive rock wall.

Wide Variety of Choices

Aside from the vast selection of rock types and other materials from which to create your retaining wall, there are also several different methods of construction. You may choose to build a gabion wall (a stone-filled mesh fit to shape), a dry stack wall (made from stones without mortar, so they can be moved), or a traditional stone-and-mortar wall. You may also choose to build your wall from ecologically friendly products that are equally hardy, as well as being economical and kind to the planet.

Low Maintenance and Durable

Retaining walls are extremely low maintenance; once you have constructed the wall you want, you really don't have to do anything else to keep it up, unless you use a dry stack wall and plan on moving the stones around occasionally. The level of maintenance you desire is up to you, but it's safe to say you can leave your wall alone once you've built it to your liking. Retaining walls made of natural products are meant to stand up to harsh weather conditions, so they rarely, if ever, require repair. Walls made of natural materials are often local to the area, so the materials are accustomed to weather conditions. You won't have to spend time or money replacing or repairing your wall, making it a great investment.

Highly Functional

Retaining walls are very functional; once it's constructed properly, a wall can withstand tons of weight. When built correctly, a retaining wall can hold back earth or water for decades without any problems or maintenance. Walls can provide structural slope retention from 50 to 70 degrees. You can use them to create space-saving, eye-catching vertical gardens, and many of the environmentally-friendly walls are installed faster and more economically than traditional walls.

Ecologically Friendly

benefits_of_retaining_wallsMany ecologically-minded consumers are turning toward naturally-built retaining walls, because they use up to 50% less concrete than traditional walls. They also result in reduced disruption to the natural vegetation of the area, and reduce storm water runoff. Retaining walls made of sustainable products are as long-lasting, beautiful, and affordable as traditional walls, but fit in better with the natural surroundings of your home, and have less of an impact on the environment.

Adding a retaining wall to your property is a beautiful, simple, and durable solution to your landscaping problems, whether you wish to make an attractive addition to your home to increase its resale value, or you need to hold back some earth or water and want an appealing option. Choosing green materials for your retaining wall is a great way to improve your environment while improving your home's appearance and value.

Great article on the benefits of retaining walls. I agree variety is one of the greatest benefits. My ward is super flat so I'm considering adding different levels with these types of walls.

Great post! I learned a lot about the benefits of retaining walls by reading this article. Thank you for explaining that "Adding a retaining wall is an easy, affordable way to increase your home's value." My family and I are planning on selling our home so it is good know that adding a retaining wall will help to increase the value of our home.

I never would of guessed that retaining walls were so beneficial. Thank you for explaining that "Retaining walls are extremely low maintenance; once you have constructed the wall you want, you really don't have to do anything else to keep it up, unless you use a dry stack wall and plan on moving the stones around occasionally." I have never had retaining walls before but it is good to know that it won't take a lot to maintain and take care of them.

I didn't realize that retaining walls can add value to your home. I like the idea of using one to separate different sections of my landscape or garden. You also make a good point about how they are low maintenance and durable. Since they are easy to keep up and affordable, it seems like they can be a great investment for anyone's home.

I was planning on remodeling my backyard, and I think that a retaining wall would be great. It'll not only add a nice aesthetic purpose but the value of my home. That way I'll have a nice addition to my backyard, but something to add value to my home in case I want to resell.

Thank you for the help. I have been considering having a retaining wall built in my yard, but was not sure. I had not thought about it adding value to my home, as you mentioned. What material would you use for a retaining wall?

I also love that retaining walls provide some character and dimension to a yard. I love that you can decorate them with flowers and other plants. So, instead of just being functional and practical, they are also beautiful!

I learned a lot about retaining walls by reading this article. It was interesting to learn that retaining walls can withstand tons of weight and last a long time. I hope this article can help my mom to know what home project will have the biggest impact on her home.

A retaining wall is something that I've really been considering in my yard. I didn't realize that it adds value to your home, that makes it an interesting investment. I'll have to look into it more in the future.

This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that retaining walls help add value to your home. I moved into an older home a few years ago, and I'm trying to find projects to do to make it more appealing and more valuable. Maybe I could put some retaining walls in my yard to add value by improving the appearance of my landscape.

Informative post! I would add few more benefits of retaining walls to what you have mentioned above.Retaining walls are very easy to design and can be made to look like a part of the exterior walls of your property very effectively. The design depends on the desired use and function of the wall.If the wall is to be used solely as a retaining wall, then the wall area can be dug out using a bobcat or other digging equipment, whose use would totally depend on the size of the project. The area can even be dug out at different levels to create the impression of stepping stones. Once the area has been dug out, the ground is leveled so that the wall can rise straight up to the designated height.
