Why You Should Build a Skate Park: Benefits of a Skate Park

A skate park is a place where kids and teens (and even adults) can go to skate, bike and play in a safe and confined environment. There are multiple reasons to build a skate park; not only do they fill empty land and provide kids with a place to exercise but they can also be very beneficial to a community. Whirl Construction is a New Jersey contractor that builds parks, concrete curbing, skate parks and more. Here are five great reasons to build a skate park in your community.

Skate Parks from Whirl Construction
 1.    Safety

While no one has ever said that skating is one of the safest sports it is much safer to skate in a skating park than anywhere else. Most skating accidents happen on roads or involve automobiles in parking lots or at road crossings. Skateboarders can also be a hazard on sidewalks because a skateboard moves much quicker than a walking pedestrian. Many skaters only skate on roads and sidewalks because they don’t have anywhere else to skate. Building a skate park will get them off the street and into a safe, confined area away from pedestrians and automobiles.

2.    Creativity

Skate parks might be safe but they are also challenging. Skating is a high energy sport that demands creativity because it constantly encourages skaters to learn tricks and maneuvers with their boards. Skate parks allow skaters to develop their skills and use their creativity to come up with new and interesting tricks. Skate parks give skaters the opportunity to safely practice their sport and enhance their skill in a very creative and competitive environment.

3.    Low Maintenance

A well-constructed skate park will require very little maintenance. Most skate parks are constructed of durable materials such as grout, concrete and steel. Some of the nation’s oldest skate parks (about 30 years old) have never been repaired except for cosmetic fixes such as cleaning and the removal of graffiti. This means that a skate park is a one-time investment that will be providing your community with a safe and fun creative outlet for years to come.

4.    Athleticism

Skateboarding is a sport currently valued at 2.5 billion dollars. People who are good at skating can even make a career out of it as a professional athlete. Other examples of monetary gain include earning scholarships from the sport (the annual Patrick Kerr Skating Scholarship offers $10,000 to the winner of their competition). Without a skate park to practice in, skaters can never really achieve the level of skill required to compete against other skaters.

5.    Beauty

A skate park is also aesthetically pleasing. Skate parks are built with curved lines designs that are pleasing to the eye. Often, artists will decorate skate parks with paint and high quality graffiti. A skate park also shows that your community is interested in helping an underserved artistic community.

Skate parks provide a safe and fun creative outlet for your community. They require little maintenance and can be a great source of athleticism and exercise. Skate parks can be big or small to fit into a variety of budgets and lots. If you want to build a skate park, a New Jersey construction company such as Whirl Construction can help you.
